This Danish Supermarket Chain Will Produce Grocery Bags From Trash

Every day the Danish supermarket chain, Coop, receives products wrapped in plastic, to protect them while being transported to the store. That is 600 plastic tons a year.

Instead of throwing the plastic to trash, Coop will now use it to produce recycled grocery bags. This way nothing goes to waste, and it decreases the production of plastic.

“At Coop, we do not just have an ambition to cut down on the plastic wrapping of our products, we also work on every solution to recycle the plastic. This new recycled grocery bag is a perfect example. All plastic-waste now goes through an internal system – it’s now being transported directly to the plastic bag production, and reused for new bags,” Signe Frese, Coop, told Ritzau.

Coop has a plan to reduce their use of plastic down 25% by 2025.

“It’s a great thing to recycle plastic. Remember to reuse your grocery bag again and again,” she says.

The new bags is already in store and will replace the old ones.
